Environmental concept

Out of respect for nature as well as for local cultural circumstances, it is our primary goal to carry out the Swiss Orienteering Week 2019 in Gstaad in an environmentally sound manner. The environmental concept is used to define guidelines for the organisation, to sensitize helpers and to make environmental management visible to the outside world.

The following areas are taken into account in the environmental concept:

  • Organisation OC
  • Authorizations, agreements and communication
  • Waste, littering, noise
  • Meals, materials and prizes
  • Traffic, transport, energy and infrastructure
  • Nature and landscape

  • Organisation OC
  • Authorizations, agreements and communication
  • Waste, littering, noise
  • Meals, materials and prizes
  • Traffic, transport, energy and infrastructure
  • Nature and landscape

The following basic measures are provided for the individual areas of responsibility:

Organisation of the OC

A person responsible for the area „environment“ coordinates the measures and activities for the implementation of the environmental concept in all other areas of the OC.

Authorization, agreements and communication

Affected authorities and interested parties are informed proactively and at an early stage, as well as being adequately involved in the planning processes. The environmental management of the SOW 2019 is communicated in an appropriate form both internally and externally.

Waste, littering and noise

Resulting waste is minimized and disposed of separately. Enhanced noise as well as artificial lighting are limited to the utmost necessary only and are taking place in a targeted way.

Meals, materials and prizes

Regional and local products are preferred. „Give-Aways, prizes and disposable materials are selected according to criteria of origin, production type and recyclability.

Traffic, transport, energy and infrastructure

The SOW 2019 has a mobility concept which is based on the public transport system. Wherever possible, existing infrastructures are used. Additional constructed infrastructure will meet the criteria of using sustainable resources (material, energy).

Nature and landscape

All activities of the SOW 2019 are taking place with greatest consideration for natural and cultural areas. The protection of vulnerable ecosystems is assured. Any damage will be repaired. The defined and established rules by the governing body of Swiss Orienteering which have been followed successfully for years will be implemented.
